Our History

The story of Yallahs High School begins on February 9, 1967, when community leaders and educators recognized the urgent need for expanded secondary education opportunities in St. Thomas parish. Founded as a Junior Secondary School, the institution initially served students in Grades 7 to 9, providing a crucial educational foundation for young people in Yallahs and surrounding communities. As the years passed and the community grew, so did the school's ambitions and capabilities. In 1975, just eight years after its founding, the institution was upgraded to Secondary School status, reflecting both increased enrollment and enhanced academic offerings. This upward trajectory continued through the following decades, with the school achieving Comprehensive High School designation in 1995, recognizing its broad range of academic and technical programmes. A significant milestone came in 1999 when the school achieved full High School status, cementing its role as a premier educational institution in St. Thomas. This transformation represented nearly three decades of steady growth and improvement, during which thousands of students had passed through its halls, many becoming the first in their families to complete secondary education. Recent years have brought exciting new developments, with the school introducing a sixth form pathway in 2022 to serve students in Grades 12 and 13. The expansion continued in 2025-2026 with the addition of specialized programmes in Hospitality and Tourism Management, strategic offerings that align with Jamaica's key economic sectors. These developments reflect the school's commitment to staying relevant and responsive to both student needs and national workforce demands. As Yallahs High School approaches its diamond anniversary in 2027, the institution stands poised for its next chapter of growth. Plans for expanded technical training programmes and improved facilities are already underway, ensuring that this cornerstone of St. Thomas education will continue empowering students and strengthening communities for generations to come. For nearly sixty years, the school has remained true to its founding mission while continuously adapting to meet the challenges of an evolving world.
